in London brought together the greatest collection of books ever exhibited
in one place. The 1967 book that resulted, Printing and the Mind of
Man (PMM), remains the most useful single guide to the books that

literature, science, medicine, history, philosophy, religion, economics,
art, architecture, printing, and exploration.
Grolier 100 American Books. In 1947 The Grolier Club
mounted in New York an exhibition of the most influential books printed
in America before 1900. The book continues to be a useful guide and source
of inspiration for collectors of American history and literature.
Grolier 100 English Books. The frequently cited 1903
Grolier Club exhibition of One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature
covers English books in a variety of fields and also incorporates a small
number of American books.
Heralds of Science. Bern Dibner’s library of scientific
books served as the basis of his landmark catalogue Heralds of Science,
which to this day serves as a guide for collectors, librarians, and booksellers.
Dibner’s collection of these books and papers is now at the Smithsonian.
Dibner wrote in the preface to his catalog, “To live in this age
of science without an awareness of its fascinating origins is to miss
much of the spirit of its attainments.”
